How to Save iPad’s ECID SHSH File
Before starting this tutorial let me brief you about ECID SHSH file (newbie perspective). ECID is a chip ID, which is different for every chip, and is used by iTunes to generate signatures for iPhone/iPod Touch during firmware restore process. This is a new security process which is used by Apple to prevent users from jailbreaking iPhone/iPod Touch, by restricting them from downgrading to lower firmware, because a new firmware takes time to get jailbroken.
Since we are expecting new iPhone OS 4.0, so i would say that this is the right time to take backup of your iPad’s OS. To do so, simply download Firmware Umbrella, which is used to capture and save ECID. This tool is available for both, Mac and Windows. Install and run Firmware Umbrella, enter your iPad’s ECID (How to find your device’s ECID is explained later), Choose Saurik – Cydia in SHSH Repository and click submit. If you do not know, how to find ECID of your iDevice then follow these steps,
For Windows users:
- Put the iDevice in Recovery Mode by Connecting it to computer through USB and turn it off. Press and hold power and home button until iTunes icon appears on the screen.
- Download and start USBView.
- Under Options, go to Config Descriptors.
- Press F5.
- Find Apple Mobile Device (Recovery Mode).
- Copy the 16 digit number corresponding to the ECID.
- Got to http://purplera1n.com, paste those digits and hit send.
- Save the file.
- Exit Recovery Mode by Unplugging USB cable, reconnect it, and wait for 1 minute. Device will restart and return to normal mode.
For Mac users:
- Put the iDevice in Recovery Mode by Connecting it to computer through USB and turn it off. Press and hold power and home button until iTunes icon appears on the screen.
- Go to Applications >> Utilities >> Start >> System Profiler.
- Select USB from the left pane and click Apple Mobile Device (Recovery Mode).
- Look for ECID and copy corresponding 16 digit number.
- Got to http://purplera1n.com, paste those digits and hit send.
- Save the file.
- Exit Recovery Mode by Unplugging USB cable, reconnect it, and wait for 1 minute. Device will restart and return to normal mode.
Now you could jailbreak your iPad (as soon as the iPad jaibreak becomes available) , without worrying about any accidental updates.
