How to SSH into iPod Touch 2G [Transfer Files, Apps via SSH Access]

If you want to put files such as apps, games, videos, ROMs on your iPod Touch without using iTunes then you have to secure access SSH into your iPod Touch. SSH access is similar to FTP connection, today I will guide you through the process of SSH in iPod Touch 2G

Pre- Requirements for SSHing iPod Touch in Windows

  1. Jailbroken iPod Touch 2G, RedSn0w Jailbreak
  2. Open SSH, Download it on your iPod Touch by going to Cydia and search for OpenSSH
  3. Find and download SBSettings on your iPod Touch, it is available at BigBoss sources
  4. Download SSH Client WinSCP for Windows, install it.

OpenSSH iPod TouchBigBoss Sources

SSH iPod Touch 2G using Wi-Fi Tutorial

Now to be able to transfer files between your Windows PC and iPod Touch we will need secure connection of SSH, we can do SSH into iPod Touch in two ways

1: via USB  SSH, iPhone tunnel suite required

2: via Wi-Fi SSH

I will tell you how to do Wi-Fi SSH into iPod Touch using Windows,

Your Wi-Fi should be on and working,  now open SBSettings

as SBsettings do not come with a icon you need to swipe your finder at the top of your iPod Touch screen. You will be presented with the following screen. Note down Wi-Fi Address

SBSettings

Now open the WinSCP program in Windows,

Type hostname as 192.168.1.3

login details are :

Username: root

Password: alpine

click login

SSH iPod Touch Tutorial image2

If some warning pops up press YES, one time only.

Now you will be presented with the following screen, if you have ever tried FTP connection transfer before, you will immediately notice the similarity, left pane is your Windows PC and right pane is your iPod Touch. Now you can SSH(secure transfer) files to your iPod Touch easily.

Initially you will be at /private/var/root/ as shown in image below , navigate to /private/var/mobile/Media/ , make folders for your choice here like Songs, Videos, ROMs etc

Everyone that says this doesnt work, go to wifi settings, find the connection you are connected to and touch the blue arrow. Where it says IP address, put that where hostname is. The example he is using is his IP address, so it won’t work for you

I got a problem while downloading SBSettings and needed (or just wanted) to restore my iPod, so I’ll never ever try to SSH again… I think.

Comment by Jailbreaknewb on September 7, 2009 @ 9:23 pm

For everyone having the Network Error, you are not typing in the host name correctly. Do not use the “192.168.1.3″ that the author gives you, that is an example. Go to SBSettings (by sliding your finger across the status bar [the bar with the time on it]) And use the “Wi-Fi IP Address” you find there.

Comment by Tezema on October 6, 2009 @ 8:51 pm

I’ve done everything right, i put in the right IP but i still get the Netowrk ERROR: Connection Timed Out thing… has it something to do with the port?

Comment by Melon on November 9, 2009 @ 7:46 pm

found the solution,

use the SFTP protocol :) not the one that allows fallback

Comment by Melon on November 9, 2009 @ 7:59 pm

ok, everytime i try it, all i get is a msaage that says: Network error: Connection timed out. help plz?

Comment by Epic Fail on November 10, 2009 @ 1:50 am

Yep I get the connection timed out error too. And the second time I try it says connection refused. I tried it with and without fallback on the SFTP protocol. My SBSettings say that the 192.168.1.3 is my wifi ip address. I haven’t a clue what to do.

Comment by blee on November 12, 2009 @ 11:03 am

Make sure that after you get access to ssh you change that default password alpine (which everyone knows) to something else or you might get a nasty surprise!
Cheers

I did everything right and it said – “Network error: Connection refused”
What should I do?

Comment by Will on December 17, 2009 @ 12:25 pm

It didn’t work at first for me, it saying that “Network error: Connection refused” However in the SBSettings drop down menu it was not showing the SSH button at all. I resprung my iPod Touch and tried SBSettings again and saw that SSH was present and activated.

In all, follow this tutorial with your own wi-fi address again, but respring it (this action is located in sbsettings) first. That should clear up the error :)

Comment by Hierarch on February 23, 2010 @ 2:04 pm

For the “conection time out problem” OR “connection refused”: first of all u need to know that it happens when the host doesn’t respond first check the SCP’s session data:
get the Ip address (host name) from iPod (setting >>> Wi-Fi >>> “network’s name” >>> Ip Address )

IMPORTANT : please its not always “192.168.1.3″ Ip addresses are not static u need to check the ip every time and it may change every time u connect another device to network its the most likely reason to get the “Connection Time Out/refused” because the IP u gave refers to nothing or the PC it self

port = 22
Username: root
Password: alpine (no Capitals)
IMPORTANT : u DO NOT need SBsetting in order to establish a SCP connection its just tells u the Ip address (witch i told u the best way)

If still have problems: go check if “DHCP” protocol is enabled in ur router setting page “192.168.1.1″
ADVANCED:if you are tired of checking ip every time u can set up a static ip for ur device (setting >>> Wi-Fi >>> “network’s name” >>> Static >>>ip address = 192.168.1.xxx subnetmask = 255.255.255.0 router = as the DHCP DNS = as the DHCP
BTW: if u set up a bridge connection make sure the connection works probably and is accepted by the router (router ip resolved)

It’s running a modded Darwin OS on the Ipod, so once openssh is installed and running, you can ssh into it from anywhere so long as you’re familiar with networks and routing, etc. Most of the things you can do once you’re in are lost on the windoze generation, but anyone on unix/linux is gonna have some fun with this. Running Gnome, you can open up the ipod using Nautilus, it’ll automatically connect via sftp, ask for login info, and everything’s good to go. /me pities all the extra lame work the M$ kiddiez have to go through *head pat*

I’ve been trying to get my old app store apps onto my iPod with their save files by ssh, but no matter what I do they kick me out instantly and the icon is white or square depending on where it is saved (either private/var/stash/Applications.na7q or private/var/mobile/Applications. At the moment the apps are still in their folder, the one with the random numbers and letters, but I’ve messed around a bit and haven’t found anything remotely helpful.

My iPod works fine, it’s just the apps I try to SSH.

Any help would be greatly appreciated (like where they should be saved, what permission they should be set to ANYTHING)! Or even just a link to what could help.

Thanks!

Hi,

I’ve gotten to the point that I can copy files back and forth to and from the iPod. But how do I play uploaded files on my iPod touch?

For example: I moved “example.mp3″ from my computer to /private/var/mobile/Media/Podcasts, because this is where I see the other podcasts which were downloaded from iTunes. But on my iPod device I do not see “example.mp3″ showing up anywhere so that I can play it!

Am I missing something?

I’ve tried other directories to but I don’t understand how to access the media, say for example, the directory: /private/var/root/Media, but how do I access these files from the device itself?

Comment by Patrick on March 23, 2011 @ 7:20 pm

Wow why are people being d*cks on here to people who can’t figure it out…..

@ “bull****, ya right u tried it 15 times. no one help this lier.”

he probably meant the program attempted 15 times and didn’t connect.

either way, don’t be a d*ck

If it isnt working, re-enter the login credentials, doublecheck everything, make sure SSH is ENABLED! and your wifi is ENABLED! and that your ipod is USB connected to the pc you’re using, and the drivers are working.

Comment by T6x on May 11, 2011 @ 7:30 pm

Either way, you should not attempt this unless you KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING.

You can PERMANENTLY screw your iphone/ipod’s OS if you delete the wrong thing.

So, SSH at YOUR OWN RISK!

Comment by T6x on May 11, 2011 @ 7:31 pm

Don’t enter the wifi address he has listed… as he stated, NOTE DOWN THE WIFI ADDRESS THAT IS SHOWN ON YOUR SBSETTINGS!

Use THAT wifi address as hostname!

Comment by T6x on May 11, 2011 @ 7:32 pm

Do you have to have wifi on your pc that you are using? If so, that would solve my problem :)
