Application Opens and Closes Quickly Problem on iPod Touch

App opens and closes itself immediately or within a few seconds. This problem you might face with Jailbroken or non Jailbroken iPod Touch, this problem occurs when some of the application are using the memory even after you have exited them, be careful when you are using backgrounder application. Now to solve the problem I will be providing some very basic troubleshooting steps.

First the application problems:

App opens up and closes immediately

App opens up and you even started playing and then suddenly it closes itself within a few seconds

Now these are similar but could be two different problems, follow these troubleshooting steps to solve app instability problem:

First: You must try is a reboot or restarting your iPod Touch( iPod Touch 2G jailbreakers have to follow the boot process again). Restarting your iPod refreshes the memory of iPod  Touch and chances are that your applications will be running fine after a restart. It is also recommended that you should restart your iPod Touch once in a week.

Second: The app doesn’t meant for your iPod Touch

Third    : The app isn’t available in your country and you might be using .ipa files for installation, if you have this problem with .ipa files then try another version or latest version of the app and it might work.

Fourth: Use applications that frees memory, i recommend a restart though.

Most of the time, a simple restart solves the closing app problem.

Let me know your valuable thoughts, have you ever faced this problem

I have had this problem of apps that close after a few seconds, and after restarting my ipod, the problem persisted.

Comment by Xavier on February 27, 2009 @ 1:10 am

Another way is to install any application from the app store, and upon downloading it, open it. All the other applications can the be opened again.

Comment by David on May 4, 2009 @ 2:02 pm

Thanks for the comments. I have been having this problem, even after restarting my iPod several times. I went through and opened all apps on my iPod Touch to insure they had all been opened since their last update, and I used the “free memory” function in iStat. It seems to be OK again now. Thank-you!

I’ve been having an issue with my ipod touch since it was updated to the 3.0 software. Now all of my third party apps without exception quit within a second of being loaded. I have restored it several times, reset the settings, deleted everything and uninstalled and reinstalled my apps manually, restarted it and all and am still having this issue its very frustrating any advice?!?

Okay, so My Itunes store won’t work. Everytime I try and access it, it tells me my “network connection is down”. So I gave up on that awhile ago. Then later My apps froze on me so I deleted them then re downloaded them. They worked fine, then yesterday I synced my ipod, now my apps are frozen, when I try to redownload them my Ipod starts speaking friggen Spanish to me. So as we speak I’m reseting my ipod, deleting everything, and then I’m going to re-sync it. But I don’t know this is friggen insane.

Comment by Alanna on August 30, 2009 @ 4:19 pm

I restarted several times, and the applications still failed to open for more than 1/2 second.

I then plugged the iPod into the computer, and once iTunes opened, the applications started to work normally. Try this and it may work!

Ok, after I updated to 3.1.2 on my 32gig ipod touch, all my apps stopped working. Did the whole would sorta open, then close really fast. Here is how I fixed it: you need to go to the app store and install any NEW free application, and then all the other apps worked perfectly fine. Hope this helps :)

Comment by andrew on October 10, 2009 @ 5:01 pm

Try these steps

1) remove apps from iPod/ iPhone (press and hold til they wiggle then press the “X”)
2) remove apps from computer (if needed)
3) Deauthorize/Authorize iTunes - this is one from menu bar at the top of iTunes
4) Re-download Apps from iTunes Store on Computer -( if they were purchases, it will simply prompt you to download again)
5) Re-Sync

Hope this helps

I have tried all of the above countless times and yet it still is not working - very frustrating, only bought it yesterday and i already want to throw it out the window! Is there anything else i can do to get applications to load as i have had enough!

Comment by hayley on October 24, 2009 @ 11:40 am

I’m not real happy with the ipod touch either; working fine for three days, then i encountered the problem where no third-party app windows will remain open for more than a second. I upgraded to 3.1.2 w/o benefit. Uninstall/reinstall does not work…

I have a 32g iPod touch. All the Apps used to work, but since I hooked it up to my stereo some of them only open and then close immediately. Not all the Apps do this. I have checked and all Apps are up to date. I have tried resetting and restarting. Tried turning them off through iTunes, tried taking them off and reinstalling them. What is going on?

I have the same problem. Also none of my apps will delete from the wiggle. i have to go on the computer (or cydia) and uninstall them or delete the package.

I am having no luck with any methods posted here and it sux. Sure i may have Jailbroken my ipod but i paid lots for it and surely apple can sort this out. It’s very disappointing and annoying that the service from apple is now not what it seems.

Comment by James on November 19, 2009 @ 6:28 pm

I had the exact same problem on my iPod touch 32gb that is only a few days old. Installing a new application from the app-store as Andrew suggested did the trick. I did it with the free NASA application. Don’t know when it will happen again though, quite frustrating.

I have the original 16g itouch that was released in 2007. I just recently updated to the new software so I could add app’s to my ipod. Orginally they all worked fine. Then I downloaded some other ones, and those did not work. Then they all stopped working all together. I have restored my ipod, I have reset it several times, I have deleted all apps and downloaded them all again, I have downloaded a new app and tried to install. And I am still having the same problem. The apps open and close within a second. If the apps were free maybe this would not be such a problem. But I paid for them, and for what? For nothing, thats what for. I even tried to download iStat, just to be notified after I paid for it that the “free memory” function has been removed. I am getting sick and tired of my apple products failing and not working constantly. Can somebody PLEASE help me before I smash my macbook and itouch. I have tried everything, and NOTHING is working for me. Somebody PLEASE tell me there is a way to fix this??

same problem for me…brought ipod touch 3rd gen 32gb 2 days ago…none of my applications have opened since purchasing.

Have restored the ipod from the computer, reset (from the ipod itself) deleted and re installed apps, deleted off the computer and ipod and redownloaded the apps on the computer as well as the ipod

deauthorized and authorised itunes, tried pretty much everything above…still nothing works

have a feeling it’s the updated software but i don’t know if i can downgrade to a previous version as the ipod is brand new

can anyone think of any other ideas or does apple have a patch for this yet?

Comment by Bruce on December 14, 2009 @ 12:13 am

I had the same problem also a week ago. I restored my Ipod Touch and I started to synchronize the apps with Itunes. But pretty much none of my apps would synchronize, some kind of error.

I still don’t know why the problem occured but if you’ve jailbroken your device the solution could be transferring the (ipa) files with SSH to your device and install them with Installous (available in Cydia). This worked for all my applications that wouldn’t install with Itunes.

You also got two options for installing, clean and dirty, the clean one is recommended and works pretty much all the time, if not, the dirty method probably will.

Comment by JD on December 15, 2009 @ 8:29 pm

Did any of you go on a site with viruses such as p*rn? I think that might be the problem to it, that you’ve got a virus on your ipod

32G Touch, tried everything movies and apps just open then close. This is my second Touch, 2 weeks old and I’m in Iraq so I have nowhere to go to get help, exchange, or refund. This blows, I’m out hundreds of dollars and my only source of entertainment doesn’t work. Thanks Apple!

Comment by Jason on December 21, 2009 @ 3:29 pm

I had the same problem with the apps on itouch 3g… Solution: Goto apps free section, I deleted weather channel, then reload just that app. What happens is it reboots the entire apps interface on your itouch….problem solved

Comment by patrick on December 24, 2009 @ 1:57 am

Remove all the apps from itunes and ipod
Deauthorize your itunes account
reauthorize your itunes account
download the apps
Sync and you should be good to go.

It worked perfectly for me. It is a known issue with Apple and will hopefully be resolved soon.

I have the same problem. I have refused to buy iPods in the past because of problems and lack of customer support. I got this for Xmas and the apps worked fine for one day. I’ve tried all of the above, but none work. I’m sending mine back to the shop I bought it from for a refund.

Comment by PETE on December 26, 2009 @ 5:53 pm

DON’T SYNC YOUR APPS. From here (this has worked for me):

http://discussions.apple.com/m.....5#10255545

Hello all.

I was having this same issue. I had tried EVERYTHING this forum suggested but had no luck. I was just messing around with different things and figured out a fix. This is how to fix this issue:

1) Restore your iPod to factory settings. You can do this by opening up your iPod in iTunes and hit restore. If you have issues, use this page for help: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1275

2) DO NOT restore from backup! Do it as a new device! If you do from backup, you are just installing all the bad things again. Doing it as a new device gives you a clean slate to work from. You basically get a NEW iPod. Set up your iPod as you did when you first got it. When it asks what you want to sync, DO NOT CHECK APPLICATIONS!

3) Go to the applications tab in your device page and make sure that it is not set to automatically sync applications. DO NOT SYNC YOUR APPLICATIONS! I did not have the issue until I synced the apps, so unless you need to for some reason, NEVER sync your apps.

4) Re-download your Apps from the App store on your iPod. You will not have to pay for any that you have already bought. After this you should not have this problem.

Hope this helps!

Comment by Ana on December 27, 2009 @ 12:30 am

I just got my 8gb iPod Touch for Christmas, and it’s worked fine until today. Everytime I go on an app that I downloaded, it closes within a second. I tried all the methods you’ve posted, and it is still not working. It’s very frustrating to have this thing mess up one day having it.
Can someone please contact apple and try to figure out this?
Obviously a lot of people are having problems, and I am suprised that they haven’t took notice of this.

Right now I am feeling like I would be better of without the iPod Touch, so PLEASE help!

all seems to be working fine now

many thanks & happy Christmas Pete!

Comment by Rupert on December 27, 2009 @ 1:21 pm

My 32 gb ipod touch did the open and close thing.
What i did to solve it was deauthorize and authorize my computer again, and then redownload all the apps, but also sync some more music.
I dont know whether this will work for everybody but it did for me.
Hope this helps.

Comment by JordanHussell on December 27, 2009 @ 1:48 pm

SOLUTION HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

After searching the web, I know now why the applications are opening and closing right away. Are you ready!!!

It’s the Safari application that is on your Ipod. You need to make sure that it’s close properly. That there is no web page open. Click on the SAFARI, If there’s a Web page showing up, then you need to close or delete the page. And Voila! go back to an application that was closing and now it should stay open. Apple should fix this.

Let me know if this works for you!

Comment by Tonic on December 27, 2009 @ 2:26 pm

so i restore my ipod touch and did not restore the back up.
and did a new device… AND IT WORKS .the apps worked fine.

Comment by ALEX on December 27, 2009 @ 7:19 pm

haii, uhm I restart my iPod and I open up the aim and it works fine. But when I exit the aim app, and go bak on it, the screen is just white then it crashes after a couple seconds. I don’t know what’s wrong with it. I already tried syncing from iTunes but it is just the same. Can you try to give me and advice on what to do?

Not too happy with this!
Had a previous Classic 32gb for years and never had any problems at all. had this 8Gb Touch now for 3 days and its started doing the same as you lot.

Re-starting didnt work,
i’m in the process of un-installing / re-installing the apps all over again to see if this works.
Can i ask what app you had just installed when this first happened?

It seemed to be as soon as i installced Facebook that this happened, not sure if its coinsidence, or if its a dodgy App?

only took about 20 mins or so, and even though its all the same files back on, so far so good!!! :)

Come on Apple!!!!

Get this sorted properly!!!!

Comment by Chris on December 28, 2009 @ 2:33 pm

I am also one of the many people who was perplexed why none of my third party apps wouldn’t successfully open after using them OK for the last two or three days.
I tried a reset of my iPod Touch (8gb) by holding down the ‘Home’ and ‘Power’ button but this did not work.
However - I uploaded a new ‘free’ app and that RESOLVED THE PROBLEM.

I would certainly give this a go, as it is probably the quickest ‘possible’ solution mentioned so far.

Still not sure what caused the initial problem but I’m sure Apple are on the case!

Comment by Richard on December 28, 2009 @ 4:48 pm

Comment by Eddie on December 30, 2009 @ 5:18 am

You’d think a complete amount of quality control testing would have been subjected to these things before being released. Not just the iPod itself but the apps as well. If they don’t work, don’t include them in the Store. I’m now trying to get my son’s working as well. So far I’d rate this purchase as EPIC FAIL. Either they get an update out VERY SOON or else.

Comment by ncc2012 on December 30, 2009 @ 10:07 pm

I tried everything else as well: syncing, restoring from backup, restore to factory settings and use backup to sync, etc. The thing that finally worked for me was:

1) File: Transfer purchases from ipod (in case you downloaded programs directly to your device through the app store, and not from itunes). This way you’ll have a copy of all of your apps on your itunes in case you’re worried about having to re-download them. I didn’t have to delete and re-download anything from my computer either.

2) Summary: restore. Restore to factory settings and DO NOT restore from a backup. Set up as NEW IPOD (with whatever name you want).

3) Sync apps (just make sure your computer is authorized with your itunes account). Sync whatever else you want on your ipod too.

This worked for me. ABSOLUTELY nothing else did and I tried everything from this forum including just installing another app. I’m pretty upset that this was the only way I could get things to work because I did lose all of my saved data (I’m a word-game fanatic and had several hours into a specific saved-game). At least my apps will open fine now. This is pretty ridiculous. I’d definitely try this especially if you’re trying to get a new ipod to work. I figured I’d just forfeit my saved info in lieu of waiting for Apple to call me on January 5th. =P Good luck!

Comment by KC on December 30, 2009 @ 11:28 pm

I phoned apple yesterday, and spoke to them about it. I am surprised that none of you have seemed to do this. They said they know about the problem with third party apps and even the person I spoke to had the problem. She said that the Tech guys are working on the issue and have been since the 29th December as that is when they were back in work. They hope to have an update ready to install by the new year, but if by monday/tuesday there was still nothing to install then contact them about it. They are working on it and it is a priority for them. So don’t waste time trying to find a million ways to fix it, just wait and try updating every day and call them on monday if there has been no change.

Comment by >>KaS on December 31, 2009 @ 9:56 pm

this had happened to me, before you sync your ipod, make sure that your itunes account is authorized on that computer, if not, when you plug the ipod in, it will ask you to erase and sync, then an error will pop up and stop. So your ipod will partly delete the apps and it will no longer work untill you re download it.

3. Did NOT synch APPS.
4. Did NOT restore from backup.
5. Reinstalled previous APPS and all is good.

Thanks for tips.

Just got my iPod Touch 32GB yesterday and I’m having the EXACT same problems. I’ve tried everything that everyone has posted and none have worked for me at all. Ive restored this stupid thing at least 5 times, rebooted, etc EVERYTHING. Bought 2 of them last night and my husband’s works fine I was just the lucky one to have the one that doesnt work. Its sooo frustrating spending 300 bucks on this thing and it not working. Not to mention I’m in Germany cause husband is in the USAF and can’t get the darn thing fixed unless I send it 5000 miles back to the states. Apple better get this problem fixed because it seems to be pretty wide spread! Hope everyone finds the solution soon unless we have to wait for a new software update! Good luck everyone!

Thia one worked for me!

5) Re-Sync

Thanks

I will go into more detail on my previous post. I know this works. I cannot tell you where I work but I see it every day.

All of these steps are important to follow

1) remove apps from ipod (tap and hold until they wiggle, click “X”)

2.) remove apps from your itunes library (if needed)

3.) on the top of itunes is the menu bar ( file, edit view…store) Choose Store > deauthorize computer - choose it and put in your password

4.) close itunes and re-open

5.) go back to Store> Authorize computer - again you will be prompted for Apple ID and password

6.) Re-Download apps from your Computer - if they were purchased dont worry. YOU WILL NOT GET CHARGED AGAIN!!! you will get a prompt after you enter your appleID and password and click buy that you have already purchased, are you sure you want to download.

7.) Sync apps to iPod

Comment by amigone on January 5, 2010 @ 9:15 pm

My sister an I each got 32 gb ITOUCH for christmas this year. The itouches both worked fine for a couple of days. Then the same problem happened to my sisters. She deleted all apps, and re downloaded them (Manually deleted and manually re installed them) and now it works fine. Then, a couple of days ago, it happened to me. I think it will work, but are there any other possibilities other than deleting all apps?
Please help.
Im desperate for it to work!

This is an update from my above post. I just tried it, and not even restoring it worked. I am out of ideas, and I am going to take it in to the store for a new one. Please help with any suggestions. Same problem. It opens app and it will close immediately.

Comment by Mitch on January 11, 2010 @ 8:30 pm

This just in, just call apple, and they will explain everything.
CALL APPLE

Comment by Mitch on January 11, 2010 @ 8:41 pm

In order to fix the problem scroll up through the previous posts, and look for the post by amigone. Don’t worry, the apps are all backed up on your computer, so it will re download them for you for free. Try the suggestion by amigone. If that doesn’t work, send it in.

if you are going to restore iPod - Restore iPod WITHOUT backup

Comment by amigone on January 15, 2010 @ 12:34 am

I’ve been having the same problem as everyone else. I got an 8 gig for Christmas and when it did this I took it back to the store and got a new one. Now this one is doing it too. Unbelievable! I’m going to try amigone’s suggestion but is anyone else’s not playing all their music too? With both of them, when the apps stopped working some of my music stopped working also - but not all of it- and weirdly the same songs both times.

Comment by TheresaJ on January 16, 2010 @ 5:16 am

I have had the same problem as others here.

Thanks to everyone with suggestions.

I tried amigone’s suggestion and it worked, to repeat:

All of these steps are important to follow

1) remove apps from ipod (tap and hold until they wiggle, click “X”)

2.) remove apps from your itunes library (if needed)

3.) on the top of itunes is the menu bar ( file, edit view…store) Choose Store > deauthorize computer - choose it and put in your password

My iPod touch apps were working fine but someone powered it off for the first time and when i turned it back on the apps wouldnt work, not any of them, and i turned it off and on again a multipule of times, i plugged it into the computer and iTunes usually popped up, and it would say how much memory i had left and info. about my iPod, Please help me,?

Comment by Sidney on January 17, 2010 @ 7:27 pm

i tried those steps several times and they still dosent work what should i do??

Comment by laura on January 18, 2010 @ 8:26 pm

Amigone’s solution worked for my apps but some of my songs still won’t play. I’m going to try the same steps with the songs. My only question is will this happen again? I have a grocery list app and I hate to put all the items in again if I’m just going to end up losing it!

Comment by TheresaJ on January 20, 2010 @ 7:22 pm

Dont think it will continue to happen, seems to start because people set up their ipods and then disconnect it and start just downloading from ipod directly. The apps will work then they may stop after syncing ipod with computer.

Has something to do with authorization, I’m sure apple is aware of the issue and working on a solution.

Comment by amigone on January 20, 2010 @ 11:28 pm

ok here is the easy fix, i got a 8GB itouch for christmas and i have had this problem and tryed restoring the ipod and that didnt work i then restored it to factory settings and that didnt work either. so here is the trick its very simple……… JUST SIMPLY BUY A WALL CHARGER!!!!!! you may have to delete all of your apps first, but just go buy a wall charger and im telling you this will work. my friends have had this problem too and i told them to do this and it worked great it even works with the iphone too if you are having that problem. i dont know why but it does this when you try and charge it on a computer. just do it im telling you this…….IT WORKS.

Comment by Bobby on January 21, 2010 @ 12:26 am

amigone, so should I stop downloading apps directly from my iPod?

Comment by TheresaJ on January 22, 2010 @ 3:13 pm

you should be fine to download apps from ipod or computer =)

Comment by amigone on January 23, 2010 @ 1:03 am

Thanks guys!
Installing a free app from the store made all the apps that had started shutting down as soon as I opened them work properly again.
FYI, for me the problem apps were google earth, facebook, fluid….
Hope It helps on a google search

Cheers!

I got an Ipod touch 64 GB 3G and it started working for a day or so then the problem came along. What i did was that i restored it but not from backup,i restored it as a new device then i synced it with my itunes and tried my apps and they worked perfectly.

Comment by Jon on January 24, 2010 @ 11:59 am

my ipod touch ( 8 gig ) is only three weeks old, i got it for christmas. it has worked well until today. i try to play on my apps and all of them would close. then i restored it. finally it let me play my apps, but not not let me sync my music on my ipod. so basically now all i have is a ipod that plays games. its very upsetting when you spend all this money on something that brakes and doesnt work.

Comment by ub910 on January 24, 2010 @ 11:42 pm

alright, just tried restoring it again for the third time, not my ipod it working as i should again….. weird though,

Comment by ub910 on January 24, 2010 @ 11:45 pm

If like me you have bought an ipod touch and when trying to open apps after putting them on the app opens and quickly closes without even playing you may need to restore your ipod by clicking your ipod on the itunes task bar and clicking restore it worked for me

Comment by Rob on January 27, 2010 @ 8:29 pm

The app opening and closing problem is common. The problem is when (if the iPod was turned off *BEFORE* you use a wall charger) the iPod tries to immediately begin synchronizing with a computer which there is none… the only way to fix this problem is to leave the iPod on before you charge it OR re-sync all the stuff on your iPod and remember to leave it on before you charge it. THIS IS MY UNPROFESSIONAL ADVICE and may not always work.

Comment by Hunter on February 2, 2010 @ 5:52 pm

There is a new update for the iPod touch on iTunes. I think that will do the trick. It is 3.1.3 I had already fixed my apps with amigone’s solution but this update also fixed all my songs that wouldn’t play.

Comment by TheresaJ on February 5, 2010 @ 9:22 pm

Ok I had this problem. The problem for me was that whenever I tryed to download an app from the app store directly from my iPod it would install fine but when I try to open it, it just instantly closed again. I couldn’t figure out why. I managed to fix it by changing the account I was signed in with. For some reason the apps seem to work fine when I download them from my other account! I don’t know if this will work for any1 else but it could be worth a Try.

Comment by James on February 12, 2010 @ 11:33 pm

Here is a solution…
on your computer on i tune site click on store there is option authorize click on that then they will ask account information you sign in with apple…in mine i pod its work

Comment by Amber on February 21, 2010 @ 6:41 am

Before you restore anything try downloading a new game. This problem was happening to me than i downloaded another free game and voila, all my apps were working. This usually happens due to syncing your games to the computer or (well this happens to me) if i havnt updated my apps in a while and when i go into the app store there is like 10 apps that need updated but this is probably becuase i have synced to the computer and when i update it is like downloading a new free app which than lets all the other apps work. Hope this works for all you guys.

Hi I am not happy. I got my Ipod for xmas and everything was good. till two weeks ago when it started just shutting of with little lines as if a glitch. if i tried to search it would go off. so i reset, restored, etc and no luck. i never upgraded nor jailbreak. I wonder if it has something to do with an app cause battery is good and plenty of memory. I took it to apple they could not fix it so they replaced it. Then i tried to use backup and i have no saved games and its doing the same thing the last one did. even worse it wont even come on. What is going on? Could it be a bug from computer or app? maybe i shouldnt off restored apps from old one cause thats where the error may be.

Please help me!
My email chevy3de@yahoo.com

Sincerely,

Shannon

I know the applications can work on the iPod, they are on my wifes and she has had no problems with them. We have the exact same iPod. I have tried turning it off and on, resetting/restarting, removing the apps and reloading - everything. It still doesn’t work. Any other recommendations?

Comment by Jpimpin4x4 on March 7, 2010 @ 4:36 pm

simply download a new app and open it once downloaded, the rest open after that!!!!
