No need to hack your ipod touch - just wait for february

Why would you want to use jailbreak.com to hack your ipod touch in an illegal way, when you can just wait for February and do it legally?

I was browsing the apple site for more tricks to write about on the blog today, when I noticed this neat little message. The message was amazing. People don’t have to hack to use 3rd party applications in their ipod touch anymore.

Here is the quote from the apple site:

Let me just say it: We want native third party applications on the iPhone, and we plan to have an SDK in developers’ hands in February. We are excited about creating a vibrant third party developer community around the iPhone and enabling hundreds of new applications for our users. With our revolutionary multi-touch interface, powerful hardware and advanced software architecture, we believe we have created the best mobile platform ever for developers.

It will take until February to release an SDK because we’re trying to do two diametrically opposed things at once—provide an advanced and open platform to developers while at the same time protect iPhone users from viruses, malware, privacy attacks, etc. This is no easy task. Some claim that viruses and malware are not a problem on mobile phones—this is simply not true. There have been serious viruses on other mobile phones already, including some that silently spread from phone to phone over the cell network. As our phones become more powerful, these malicious programs will become more dangerous. And since the iPhone is the most advanced phone ever, it will be a highly visible target.

Some companies are already taking action. Nokia, for example, is not allowing any applications to be loaded onto some of their newest phones unless they have a digital signature that can be traced back to a known developer. While this makes such a phone less than “totally open,” we believe it is a step in the right direction. We are working on an advanced system which will offer developers broad access to natively program the iPhone’s amazing software platform while at the same time protecting users from malicious programs.

We think a few months of patience now will be rewarded by many years of great third party applications running on safe and reliable iPhones.

Steve

P.S.: The SDK will also allow developers to create applications for iPod touch.

That’s awesome. But what exactly is an SDK, and will people have to, like, get a new iPod touch? I’m most likely getting an iPod touch for Christmas, so just wondering.
Thanks for the article.

Oh, and one more question - if you restore your iPod touch after it’s been jailbroken, is it possible for anyone to tell?

jailbreaking your ipod is not illegal.. its just you take a big risk in runing your ipod (bricking)

Comment by david on December 3, 2007 @ 8:17 pm

I’ll have an extra 3 months usage out of my iPod Touch as a full blown PDA/media player which I can easily revert to virgin state ready for the “official” opening come February.

Is it necessary? Probably not. Is it worth doing now? Hell yes!

Comment by Jeff on December 4, 2007 @ 2:45 pm

the third party apps are gunna work for the iPod touch right?

Comment by dink on December 4, 2007 @ 4:46 pm

While this is good news, it doesn’t address why Apple would continue to prevent touch users from using the existing applications currently only available on the iPhone.

Are they virus ridden too? :)

1. Jailbreaking your ipod touch is harmless. You can always revert to version 1.1 or 1.2, but exercise caution if you use applications to jailbreak or run on your ipod if you can’t authenticate the developer. If you don’t understand this, maybe you should consider giving jailbreaking a miss.

2. What I wrote above is true: it’s important to secure the platform, so that’s why we’ll be releasing a secure way for third-party apps to be deployed so for our customers who want to be secure, they can rely on what we produce to give them that security. If they want to live on the edge, they can jailbreak their ipod but they are then on their own as far as security goes. Make sense?

3. An ipod Touch isn’t an iPhone. There are differences, and one difference is software. We made that decision - i.e. what to offer in terms of apps - so that’s it.

4. An SDK is a Software Development Kit. It provides a framework for developers to develop apps with. Read more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.....opment_kit

I don’t want to jail break my iPod touch because I’m scared of breaking my iPod touch and also losing my warranty so I’m happy that by feb I can install 3rd party app on it I was jus woundering is it 100% that will be able to install 3rd party app on my iPod legally?

Thankyou

Comment by stefan on December 25, 2007 @ 5:44 am

hahaha yeah sounds good in writing, but you dumb asses have to think logically hell yeah they want sdk as a third party developer and add there developments to there website allowing people access to these developments. How much did you pay for your ipod touch? roughly $400 right? well once these 3 party developments are released they will be costly requiring a payment for something that can be received for free I already paid $400 I’m not gonna wait two months and then pay $100 more. I hope this inspired some people to think logically and if anyone now wants to jailbreak your ipod feel free to email me I have all the proper sources and programs needed I can send you so feel free and get free.

Comment by cody on December 28, 2007 @ 10:54 am

Comment by michelle on January 2, 2008 @ 12:05 pm

Just to let you know everyone who is reading this. One it’s not illegal.. If it was we would be arrested at the moment. So IT’S NOT ILLEGAL. Get your facts straight. All it does is void our warranty.

To jailbreak go to google find 1.1.1 firmware and download to a document on ur computer. go to itunes go to where it says summary. hold down shift and click update. go to the file and click on it and it should downgrade. then got to jailbreakme.com on ur touch and install the appsnapp at the bottom. installer should pop up after restart. go to installer and download bsd subsystem. then have fun downloading 3rd party applications on ur ipod. some helpful sites are.

Anyone that doesn’t want to wait (especially when there is no need to and you really will be missing out) ipodtouchmaster on youtube made some really good tutorials. I followed along and had no problems at all.

If I waited till Feb only to find out then how easy it is to do now (and if you screw up you can always restore it by connecting to iTunes and clicking “Restore”) I would be kicking myself because of all the all cool things it can do.

Comment by Susan on January 17, 2008 @ 8:59 pm

And yeah it is about as illegal as upgrading your computer or added shiney new wheel rims to your car, which is very legal.

You bought it. You are not stealing anything or taking copyrighted information.. you are simply modifying something that is your property.

Comment by Susan on January 17, 2008 @ 9:03 pm

i bet when it comes out they will charge for alll the apps a few bucks ill stick with this andn get as many for free till its too late

Comment by scotty on January 18, 2008 @ 11:53 pm

jailbreaking your ipod touch is pretty much illegal. It voids your warranty.

Comment by dink on January 19, 2008 @ 4:28 pm

Ok… first off voiding a warranty is not a criminal offence. I could take my Touch and throw it against the wall, that would void the warranty however there is little chance of going to jail over it. Now as for jailbreaking your Touch, if you have not tried it you really are missing out. There are a number of really cool apps out there. As for turning your Touch into a brick, almost no chance. I have used jailbreakme and restored my Touch many times. And I agree with the past post I spent enough on the iPod Touch that the last thing I now want to do is pay third party developers to get the same application I now have for free.

Comment by KingThanos on January 21, 2008 @ 1:17 pm

LMFAO! apple couldnt beat the hackers so they gave up and just are going to make it where we dont have to spend our time breaking threw their products… what loosers! xD

Comment by Brent on January 27, 2008 @ 12:43 am

“Jail breaking” an iPod Touch does not void your warranty nor is it illegal.

Illegal is when you purposefully steal something or use something that is copyrighted without information. Like copying a CD and then selling those copies. You’re stealing, so it’s a crime.

Your warranty will be void if you go to an Apple Store (or send it in to get fixed) and it has the Jailbreak software on it. If you restore your iPod to any version (1.1.1 - 1.1.3) then your warranty is still valid.

You only loose a warranty if you fiddle with the internal components of any piece of equipment or if you permanently change the firmware of the equipment.

Uploading the Jailbreak software is not changing any firmware and is software based.

Jailbreaking an iPod Touch is not the same as Downgrading a PSP. When you downgrade a PSP, you change the firmware and “flash” the memory of the PSP, which can go horribly wrong and that’s the end of your PSP (Brick).

You cannot brick an iPod Touch.

jailbreaking is legal, u bought it u can make it better! And Cody u r totallyyy right, crap why do it for $100 when u could so it 4 free. OH BOY! Cant wait to see how much apple charges for this. I almost paid $20 for the notes, mail, and google maps apps…..$20 bucks for that? Apple will not let something like this go for cheap….that would almost being like a “cutomer friendly” company….We wouldnt want that.

Comment by Ryan D on January 30, 2008 @ 11:35 am

Okay! Feburary is done already (almost) AND i have YET to see this third party applications add-on for the ipod touch/phone..When is it going to happen?!?!?! I’m about to give up and jailbreak my itouch! I would rather get third party applications for free then pay $20…plus I don’t know if its true or not, but you can always reset your itouch back to the regular settings, in case anythign goes wrong.

Comment by Gabby B. on February 25, 2008 @ 4:26 pm

hi. I would like to get third party applications on my iPod touch. The safe way through apple. But february has ended and apple has still not come out with any application to let me do that! What is the news on this new program? Please reply! Thanks

Comment by iPod man on March 1, 2008 @ 10:08 pm

As with any software process, there are delays. I suspect that’s all that has happened!

Comment by Dan (iPod Touch Tricks) on March 3, 2008 @ 7:06 pm

if some of you have not heard, SDKs are coming out in june and they will have a special store, “App store”, and the person that made the app can charge as much as they want. “Most will do it for free” :Steave Jobs

Comment by Derek on March 9, 2008 @ 6:18 am

The post about there being an SDK released in February is talked about, but only iPhone is mentioned. What about iPod Touch?

Comment by Sean on March 13, 2008 @ 6:43 am

I jailbroke my ipod touch and it is so worth it. Dont bother with apple

Comment by Scott on March 26, 2008 @ 2:32 pm

Okay im confused, Is it worth it or not, i dont want to void my warrenty!!. so i will just wait til the app store! , i Know jailbreaking is awsome but why risk it?, if i happened to drp my touch when its jailbreaked, im screwed, i know the restore thingy is there but what if that screws up>?, im just confused, can anyone like advise me????? many thanks

Comment by Gnomes on April 29, 2008 @ 2:11 pm

Well, from what i am reading, many of you are saying im just going to wait untill Apple lets out their 3rd party application. Well im just going to start off and say if you wait, then you are not going to get some of the apps that are on the installer now. For example, if Apple if going to have to “Approve” of the app, then, SOME of you people are not going to be able to get things like Game Boy games and things like that, that are COPYRIGHTED. Most people would just say what ever to the game boy games, I know i would, because i could care less about gameboy games,(thats just me tho). Thats just one example, there are many, but that is the first thing that came to my mind when i read this. I am also seeing people what if i jailbreak it and then i drop it and break it while it is jail broken. Wellll, i guess all i can say about that one is just do it at your own risk. Another thing is that right before i purchased my ipod touch, all i did is go to youtube and typed in ipod touch and the first this i say was “HOW TO JAILBREAK IPOD TOUCH”, i didn’t even know what it was untill i clicked on about 10 videos and just figured out what jail breaking an ipod touch really ment. I was not going on websites on if i should do it or not, but i will admit when i got it i was very much scared to jailbreak it. But after i did it, i was DEFF glad i did jailbreak it. So, my advice is to jailbreak your ipod now and not wait a year!

Comment by Collin on May 18, 2008 @ 11:07 pm

Why not just buy the 2.1 software update? It comes with the app store

Comment by Gnugget94 on November 10, 2008 @ 10:49 pm

Comment by iTouch User on February 18, 2009 @ 5:11 pm

@Thrasher
SDK Stands for Software Development kit for developing iPod Touch applications

@iTouch user and b-rad
bricking means when your iPod Touch has a black screen and you cannot do anything with it, actually theoretically you can never brick an iPod touch , you can always restore it from iTunes if anything goes wrong with jailbroking process

and Jailbreaking is not illegal currently and but it may be in future but does anyone cares?

Comment by iPod Touch Tricks on February 18, 2009 @ 5:26 pm
